Jason Shaw has been teaching music for over 30 years. He began his musical journey at age 4 with the violin, starting with the Suzuki method and learning Old Time Fiddling simultaneously. He later picked up mandolin and guitar, quickly mastering both instruments. Jason has since won the National Flat-Pick Guitar Championship four times and has had the opportunity to perform with recording artists, studio musicians, and even Grammy award-winning artists.
Jason’s teaching style is rooted in being a good listener, helping students improve by solving challenges in new and creative ways. He enjoys working with students of all ages but feels most comfortable with those at a more advanced level. His favorite part of teaching is watching his students overcome obstacles and make noticeable progress.
In addition to teaching, Jason has competed in National fiddle, mandolin, and acoustic guitar competitions since he was 6 years old. He’s performed as a soloist and in groups, playing everything from small events to large stages with thousands of people. He’s especially passionate about Bluegrass music and Old Time Fiddling.
When he’s not teaching or performing, Jason is an avid movie lover, with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings being among his favorites. He currently performs with the Sandy Creek Pickers, plays in the Jimmy Weber Band, and occasionally performs as a duo with his brother, John. He also recorded a fiddle album at age 13 and has released a guitar CD.
